During this summer I have spent a lot of my free time working on creating this new identity for my cousin who is becoming very successful in her makeup work. Her weekends are constantly filled up with clients and she has also been doing makeup for real models. Her next goal is to apply to work for her favorite makeup brand "Anastasia" while maintaining her own brand. She asked me to make her a website with all other social media designs for her makeup Instagram, Facebook, and Youtube accounts as well as business cards, and posters and a letterhead.
I was given complete artistic freedom, and that is why this project is so important on my portfolio. I have been limited to the needs and requirements of professors, bosses, and clients in my career as an artist. I have not yet been given the freedom to be experimental with my work. I made sure also not to look for inspirations for this project because I wanted to see where my brain would take me. I think you will see that each design below is different in someway as I have continued to experiment with color, shape, white space, outline vs fill, and pattern.
At first Viki went to pay someone else for her brand. After spending 300 dollars, she got the logo to the left. It was a generic and cliche icon that I could imagine any typical makeup artist to use. It also used a really ugly typeface with really boring colors that just didnt represent who Viki actually is. Instead I convinced Viki to change her logo to letters and we decided to add the eyelashes and brows later. ickyviki was chosen because it is memorable. A makeup artist doesn't typically want to associate themselves with "icky". The juxtaposition makes her stand out.
If anyone knows Viki, they know that she spends at least 2 hours to put on her makeup. If anybody knows me, they know I only use makeup when needed. So it was exciting to me to bring something gross into a brand that is there to give you a beautiful face. If one thinks about it though, there are a lot of gross things that come with doing makeup before and after the makeup has been applied. Such as plucked eye brows, clipped nails and the mess makeup makes. Then fake eyelashes left everywhere, and the makeup stain thats left in ones pillow, or how dirty your tools become from using it over the years.
I wanted to make something icky that was still cool and beautiful and memorable. I used bright blue and light pink to catch new clients eyes.
I created a website for Viki to have a place where she can direct clients as well as future employers. It has a portfolio as well as a place to buy her services. She has had some troubles with clients not paying after she has done their makeup, so I thought this was an important tool to get them to set up an appointment and to pay up front for her services. It also allows Viki to talk about herself and it allows for her to prove her skills in case any person might be questioning the quality of her work.

I hope you have noticed by now that all of the patterns are changing and different from one another even though it is using just two colors and 6 icons. This is used to represent the versatility of Viki's work, because she often has similar color palettes for each client, but she is able to make each makeup look so different from one person to another. Beyond that, I needed her brand to be able to always change and always evolve as her skills evolve and style changes. With my branding she will be able to change colors if she desires, or she can move some icons around and have a whole new look. I will eventually add more icons and so she will be able to look fresh through her new icons as well.
